-After the OHSAA
realignment placed the Flyers back in Region 22 for the first time since
1996, St. Paul battled injuries and adversity in the regular season. The
Flyers rallied to win out and earn a home Wild Card playoff game with
long-time pre-season opponent Mohawk. The Flyers held a 12-7 halftime lead,
but started a second-half run which saw them outscore the Warriors 29-0. St.
Paul put the game away for all intents and purposes with a 60-yard,
third-quarter drive which put the Flyers in control 20-7. St. Paul converted
a 4th and six along the way, and junior Joe Stoll plunged in from the four
for the score. Stoll finished with 168 yards and three touchdowns, Rob
Whitehurst had 111 yards and Gabe Stoll added three touchdowns of his own as
the Flyers won their eighth straight game.
-Eleven weeks after the Flyers beat the
Panthers 31-28 on opening night, the two teams met in the post-season for
the second time in three seasons at Bellevue Athletic Field. Gabe Stoll's
return from an early-season hamstring injury gave the Flyers and their fans
quite a lift, and his 20-yard jaunt with 9:09 remaining in the ballgame gave
St. Paul a two-possession lead. Stoll sprung free from great interior
blocking and a monster pancake from cousin Joe Stoll. Leading 13-7 with just
one second to the half, Wes Stein lined up from 28 yards out and banged a
key field goal through the uprights to give the Flyers momentum going into
the break. Two late interceptions by the Flyer secondary sealed the deal and
berth in the Region 22 finals.
-Hopewell-Loudon's 20 points in a 1:21
span spelled disaster for St. Paul's back-to-back regional title hopes as
the Chieftains took advantage of a miserable Flyer third quarter which saw
them commit two lethal turnovers and lose the ball on downs. The game
perhaps spiraled out of control for the Flyers in the waning moments of the
first half. Leading 6-3 with a half-minute remaining, Joe Stoll had his punt
blocked and recovered in the end zone for a Chieftain touchdown. Instead of
a halftime lead, St. Paul now trailed 10-6. After rushing for nearly 600
yards combined in the first two tournament games, St. Paul could not get its
ground game going and was forced to throw the rest of the way due to the
large deficit. The Flyers finished the season at 10-3. |
