-After
sneaking into the postseason for the first time as the eighth and final
playoff spot in Region 22, the Flyers proved to be more than what their
deceiving 6-4 overall record showed them to be at the top-seeded Mohawk
Warriors. Trailing 7-6 at halftime, the Flyers, led by Joe Stoll, roared out
to a 12-0 third quarter to take a commanding 18-7 lead entering the fourth
and final quarter, stunning the home crowd in Sycamore. The Warriors were
able to pull within 18-15 on a touchdown with 2:54 left, but an onsides
recovery let the offense run out the clock and seal the playoff victory, the
17th in school history.
-Trailing 14-7 in the final four minutes of the first half, the Flyers got a key safety that led to a 35-yard touchdown pass from Brad Frank to Dominic Dellisanti to give the Flyers a 16-14 lead with 1:40 left in the half. After a key stop, the Flyers got the ball back and were able to set up a 36-yard field goal by Wes Stein to go up 19-14 at the intermission. Joe Stoll then made a strip and fumble recovery after a big gain by McComb at the Flyer 9, and the end result was a game-changing, momentum-shifting 18-play, 96-yard drive, that took off 9:43 of the third quarter clock, capped off by one of Stoll's four touchdowns to give St. Paul a commanding 27-14 lead that would stand in the win, assuring a second consecutive match-up with Hopewell-Loudon in the Region 22 championship game.
-In a classic game that went back-and-forth for the entire duration, it was Flyer coach John Livengood and his senior starters making the ultimate risk-reward decision to extend their season another week. After scoring on a touchdown pass from Brad Frank to Dominic Dellisanti with just :29 seconds left, Livengood put the balance of the season in the hands of his seniors as to whether or not his team should play for overtime or go for the win. The seniors elected to try for two points, and the same play was called with Frank again finding Dellisanti for the two-point conversion to give the Flyers a 29-28 lead that stood for good, when H-L's Jay McAllister's 48-yard field goal as time expired was no good, putting the Flyers back in the state Final Four in Division VI for the fifth time in school history. The win avenged a 43-14 loss at the hands of the Chieftains in the Region 22 championship game a year prior in 2005.
-A Flyers vs. Flyers match-up finally took place in the state semifinals, as despite the two programs huge success over the past decade, neither team was ever dominant at the same time to set up a meeting. The Huron County Flyers and their fans couldn't have penned a better opening script, as St. Paul quickly worked down the field behind the running of Joe Stoll to take a quick 6-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. After a quick three-and-out by Marion Local, the Flyer offense was again marching towards the red zone when they turned it over on downs at the ML 24, and that proved to be as good as it would get. Running back Marc Otte ran for 260 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and in all the Maria Stein offense reeled off 47 straight points as they ran for a staggering 432 yards on the ground, the most ever allowed by a Livengood-led team in 16 seasons to end St. Paul's season one win shy of a return trip to the Division VI championship game.
