TIFFIN- Many teams saw what can now be coined as the "New London plan" from a year ago, and are still trying their best to emulate it when it comes time to facing the St. Paul football team. It was last season that New London attempted to hold on to the ball as long as possible, eating up as much as 6-to-7 minutes at a time offensively - although scoring just one touchdown in a 36-6 loss. However, at halftime of that game it was a 20-6 deficit against a St. Paul team averaging 52.5 points per game - so in the theory it kept New London in it longer. Saturday night at National Field at Frost-Kalnow Stadium, the Calvert Senecas did their best - and it worked for a quarter, as the Senecas held a 7-0 lead through the opening quarter. However, it was all St. Paul from there to the tune of 37 unanswered points in less than 24 minutes in a 37-13 win to improve St. Paul to 2-0.
After Calvert's Adam
Zahner intercepted a Dan Tracht pass on St. Paul's first possession of
the game, the Senecas went to work. They covered 51 yards in four plays
to jump in front, 7-0. Two running plays netted only two yards, but
quarterback Vinny Pardi hit Zahner for 30 yards, and then covered the
final 21 yards with a touchdown pass to Brandon Ritzler.
The Flyers came right back with one of their patented, ball control drives. They went 72 yards in 18 plays and consumed 8:25 of the clock. St. Paul tied the game at 7-7 with 9:08 left in the second quarter on a 13-yard pass from Tracht to senior, Brian Roberts and a Jim Roth extra point. Brian Griffin carried 9 times on the drive for 33 yards, and Tracht was 3-of-3 in the air including the touchdown. St. Paul quickly forced a three-and-out from Calvert and converted again to take the lead. This time it took seven plays with Adam Smith finishing it off with a one yard dive. Roth's kick made it 14-7 with 3:28 left in the half. The big play in the drive was a 28-yard strike from Tracht to Justin Wilde on a third and 16 play that went to the 19 yard line. Possibly the biggest sequence of the game came just before the half. The Flyers forced another Calvert punt and this time took over at the Seneca 47 with just under one minute left. After an incompletion, Tracht found Fries for 25 yards and again for 18 yards down to 4-yard line. On the next play Tracht hit senior Darren Smith in the end zone with just :07 remaining. Roth's third extra point gave St. Paul a 21-7 halftime lead. Flyer head coach John Livengood was impressed with Calvert, but also found plenty of positives in his own team in the first half. "Give Calvert credit," Livengood said. "They did a good job of slowing us down in that first half. We like to be more explosive on offense." One of the positives was the play of his junior quarterback, Tracht. Replacing the injured Eric Schwieterman, Tracht completed 7-of-10 passes in the first half for for 99 yards and the two touchdowns. "Daniel has done a good job the last two weeks," Livengood said. "I thought he was very creative tonight and came up with some big plays." After both teams punted to open the second half, St. Paul put the game away with a flurry of 16 points in the span of just under 3:00 at the end of the third quarter. After a 21-yard punt return by Fries to the Calvert 28, the Flyers took advantage of the short field. Griffin carried on six of the eight plays and scored from one yard out, and the score was 27-7 after the missed conversion. Then a pair of Calvert turnovers fueled the St. Paul rally. First Griffin intercepted a Pardi pass and returned it 35 yards for a score. Roth's kick made it 34-7. On Calvert's second play after the kickoff, pressure by Joel Boose forced a Pardi fumble and Darren Haineline recovered for the Flyers at the Seneca 27. After one first down, Calvert's defense stiffened and St. Paul settled for a 28-yard field goal by Roth. St. Paul forced one more turnover, an interception by Justin Wilde, before Calvert's reserves scored on a 6-yard run by Taylor Smith with :22 left to provide the final score of the evening. Coach Livengood was pleased with his team's overall performance. "I thought we had a number of different people step up tonight," he commented. "I also thought our defense did a nice job of shutting Calvert down after their first drive." St. Paul 0
