NORWALK- Many times a head football coach will say after a game that the score wasn't necessarily indicative of the way a team played. After the St. Paul Flyers made what seemed like quick work of the Tiffin Calvert Senecas Saturday night by the score of 49-14, St. Paul head coach John Livengood was in line with that train of thought. “I don’t think we played a real clean football game,” St. Paul head coach John Livengood said. “I’m happy with the win, don’t get me wrong. I’d rather win ugly than lose any day. But I don’t like the penalties, I don’t like the mental mistakes…we didn’t execute real well and had a lot of missed assignments, and that is what I was frustrated about. We just did the wrong thing a lot of the time.” Nonetheless, the Flyers (2-0) left little doubt for the second straight week in soaring out to a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter that grew to 41-0 by halftime. In the first two games of the season, the Flyers have outscored its two opponents by a combined 86-0 score in the first half. Just 47 seconds into the game, senior Matt Wilde got loose for a 73-yard touchdown run and Eric Schwieterman connected on his first of five extra points for a 7-0 lead. Just over four minutes later, Schwieterman threw a 14-yard scoring strike to Jared Fries at the 7:01 mark of the opening quarter for a 14-0 lead and the junior quarterback then found Daniel Tracht on a 16-yard touchdown pass at the 1:07 mark for the 21-0 lead. In the second quarter, Schwieterman began to put the exclamation point on his night by throwing a 15-yard touchdown to Wilde that pushed the lead out to 28-0. The highlight play of the night then took place as the Flyers were faced with 3rd-and-19, as Schwieterman took the snap in shotgun and turned it into a 70-yard touchdown run in which he didn’t spare a couple of defenders punishment. The kick attempt failed for a 34-0 lead. "It's one of our spread running plays for Eric," Livengood said of the play. "We've run the ball with him four or five times this year and it's one of the weapons that really he did a nice job with the last half of last year and it's something that's part of our package. Eric is a real good athlete, not only can he throw the ball but he can run real well too. We like to have the ball in his hands." Wilde scored the final touchdown of the half on an 18-yard run with six seconds to go before intermission to make it 41-0. “We were fortunate enough to come out and break some big plays off early,” Livengood said. “We’ve got some good skilled kids and Eric does a good job of spreading the ball around. He executed well, but he’d be the first to tell you he was a little bit off tonight. Calvert threw different fronts at us and stuff like that, but we’ve got to improve in that area. But at the same time I believe Calvert is a very good team.” Calvert put together a pair of third quarter touchdowns that sandwiched a botched punt snap that went out of the back of the end zone for a Flyer safety to leave the score at 43-14 entering the final 12 minutes. Wilde then scored his fourth touchdown of the game and third on the ground from a yard out with 11:05 left to close out the scoring. Wilde finished with 163 yards on 19 attempts to pace the rushing attack for St. Paul while Schwieterman finished 11-of-18 passing for 159 yards and the three scores through the air. Tracht was his leading receiver with five catches for 61 yards and a score. With the first two games out of the way for each team, the table is now set for a battle of unbeatens and one of the most highly-anticipated non-conference games in area history Saturday night when Huron (2-0) pays a visit to Norwalk for a second straight week to take on the Flyers. “I think it will be
a playoff atmosphere,” Livengood said. “We’ve got so much respect for coach
(Tony) Legando and his program. You talk about tremendous athletes, and
they’ve got them. It’s a great challenge for us and we hold Huron in very
high regard.” Calvert 0
